SPRINGFIELD – Legislation sponsored by State Senator Terry Link (D-Waukegan) has been signed into law that will allow 17-year-olds, who will turn 18 in the year of the general election, to register and vote in the primary election.

“My own birthday was two days after a primary, and I was disappointed I could not vote for the candidate I supported,” said Link. “I believe this gives 17-year-olds the opportunity to vote in the primary and possibly result in more voter participation.”

The U.S. Constitution says that if a state has a compelling interest in setting the voting age, the state policymakers can lower the age if it is determined to be in the state’s best interest.

Link-YouthBuild-Award-Picture-FINAL-5-14-13Illinois YouthBuild Coalition, Inc. recently presented State Senator Terry Link (D-Waukegan) with the Illinois YouthBuild Public Service award for his unwavering support of young people in Lake County. Link has been involved for many years with Illinois YouthBuild.

YouthBuild helps at-risk youth by supporting their educational goals, teaching them job skills and preparing them for college. Before entering the program, none of the youth were expected to graduate from college.

According to the Illinois YouthBuild Coalition, Inc, investing in these youth shows a lifetime return on investment of at least $7.80 for every dollar spent on a YouthBuild student. The youth are involved in programs such as building or renovating affordable houses for homeless and low-income families. Thirty-three percent of youth go into construction jobs. YouthBuild is also preventing crime by getting youth involved in their community and out of the streets. Recidivism rates for court-involved youth drop forty percentage points.

“Organizations like YouthBuild are fostering tomorrow’s leaders and I want to thank them for all of the hard work they put into mentoring these youth,” Link said.
