Books HDWAUKEGANThe Waukegan Public Library is receiving a $76,665 grant through the state’s Adult Literacy Program, State Senator Terry Link (D-Indian Creek) announced Thursday.

“These programs provide adults with valuable opportunities to improve their English language skills or overcome barriers to literacy,” Link said. “I’m glad to see that one of these grants will be coming to Waukegan to ensure this important service remains available to the community.”

The Adult Literacy Program provides grants to help students develop and enhance their reading, math, writing and English-language skills. The program assists Illinois adults who read below the ninth grade level or speak English at a beginning level.

More than 13,500 students will be served by the Adult Literacy Program statewide, assisted by nearly 6,000 volunteer tutors.

People interested in becoming volunteer tutors are encouraged to contact the Illinois Adult Learning Hotline at 800-321-9511.
